Eugene Louis Lami - genre painting (the painting of the life of
ordinary people), watercolours and lithographs. Born Paris 12th
January 1800 and died Paris 19th December 1890. Studied under
Antoine-Jean Gros (1771 - 1835), Horace Vernet (1789 - 1863) and at
the 'Ecole des Beaux-Arts'. His lithography was influenced by Auguste
Raffette (1804 - 1860) and was said to have less force but more
elegance. Lami expressed himself superbly in a distinct French style
and his lithographic collections constitute an important record of
Parisienne society during the reign of Louis-Philippe. He was equally
attracted by the English aristocracy whom he came to know over the
course of his four year stay (1825-1829) in London where he adopted
the customs of English society under George IV.
